A Scattered Life

Product description
When free-spirited Skyla marries proper and predictable Thomas Plinka, she finally finds the love and stability she’s craved since childhood. She also acquires a new family: mother-in-law Audrey, disapproving and suspicious of Skyla’s nomadic past; father-in-law Walt, gruff but kind; and Thomas’s brothers, sofa-bound Jeffrey, and Dennis, who moved across the country seemingly to avoid the family.
Skyla settles into marriage and motherhood, but quiet life in small-town Wisconsin can’t quell feelings of restlessness. Then into her life comes Madame Picard, the local psychic from the disreputable bookstore, Mystic Books, and new neighbor, Roxanne, whose goal in life is to have twelve kids even though she can’t manage the five she has. Despite her family’s objections, Skyla befriends Roxanne and gets a job at the bookstore, and life gets fuller and more complicated than she ever imagined.
Exceptionally heartwarming and inevitably bittersweet, A Scattered Life is a story that will stay with the reader long after the last page is read.

I purchased this book when I learned it was optioned for a movie -- where it languished on my Kindle for months, although I'd heard all the hype. Finally, when I couldn't decide what to read next, I clicked on "A Scattered Life," and opened the door to one of the best books I've read in several years!
Not again...

DISCLAIMER: This is not a synopsis of the material. Rather, it is my review/opinion of the book: Add one more to the "good woman with a family gets cancer, dies, leaves grieving family and friends behind" pile. I admit to feeling manipulated (and not in a good way) by the end of the book on top of the disappoinment I felt once I realized where this book was heading. The level of writing is what I would expect to see in a "woman's magazine" as a short story piece. Not that there's anything wrong with that, I like a good woman's magazine short story as much as the next gal, but it does not surprise me that the author had some difficulty getting picked up by a publisher. The writer does show some promise, but I feel she needs more polish. I am still trying to figure out which character's life was the scattered one, since they all seemed pretty linear the way they were written.

I really wanted to like this book so I hung on hoping it would get better, unfortunately it was a waste of time.
