Customer Reviews

Is this company run by a guy in his bedroom?

The company behind Peek is very amateurish. The product itself was ok, but the customer service was about the worst I have seen. It makes even AT&T look good.

I was able to connect my Peek to my gmail account, but was not able to set it up with my work account. This was due to limitations in their user interface that don't permit the level of configuration needed. This was a problem specific to Peek, as I was able to connect my iPod touch to the email account with no problems. I called up Peek support to resolve the issue. The recording said that there was a 10 minute wait. After 25 minutes, I gave up and tried their email support. Note that Peek doesn't have any kind of web-based ticket system. I received a response from my email 3 days later (much longer then their claimed turnaround time) that said the problem was "fixed". Of course, it wasn't. I then called Peek support again. After 35 minutes, they finally took my call. At this point, I was too frustrated and asked for an RMA number to return my device.

If you insist on buying a Peek, do buy it from Amazon -- I bought mine directly from Peek and they never refunded my $60 when I returned the device (within 30 days). Hopefully, Amazon can intervene if you buy it through them.

On the good side, this experience caused me to go out and get an iPhone 4 instead. It took all of 5 minutes to set that up.

Well, I ordered this little thing off another website. Bad mistake, it turned out to be a dub and had to send it back. I might reconsider buying it here because I hate paying 20 cents for a text that I send AND receive! And I don't feel like paying [...] bucks a month JUST for texting. Birthday is coming up, might just be on my list...
So close to being the neatest device made.

The Peek is a pretty little awesome device. Free wireless is great, free on the go email and texting is also great and I think just makes sense. There is no doubt that cellular carriers are getting away with murder at how much they can charge and how they play games with the US cellular market.

As a Peek owner the first thing you need to do is upgrade to the 1.1 firmware, any of previous versions of the firmware made the device basically unusable to me. I received my Peek with 1.09, the click wheel wasn't responsive, and it could never hold a cellular connection both of which are entirely fixed in version 1.1. I almost returned the device the day I got until I found a friend with an upgrade cable (IT'S A SPECIAL CABLE) and flashed the device to 1.1.

This device is perfect for what it is, email, texts, very very simple. The interface is simple and streamlined and it does this well all while lasting days on a single charge. However the device has its flaws and limitations that ultimately have lead me to return it.

It doesn't support true imap. It supports imap in the sense that it can download and send emails via imap, however it does not sync back to the server emails you've read or deleted. This becomes annoying as you have to do double duty to manage your inbox. While this slowly wore me down, I know for many people this won't be an issue.

It doesn't do HTML email. While not a huge problem, it does kinda suck that basically you won't have images of any kind in your emails except as attachments that you need to use the menu to view separately. Also because there is no html support you can't have any nice formatting in the emails, so things like my daily google calendar itinerary of the day are harder to read than I'd like...also things like my twitter digest aren't great.

It doesn't text "short codes" meaning 5 digit numbers. This was SUPER disappointing because of amazing services like GOOGLE and CHA CHA that let you use texting to perform searches, look up information, etc. This really hurt because it severely limits the type of information I can grab on the go except what Peek offers through their email services which are just not as good.

Peek Apps don't live up to their potential. With Maps you can't simply get a detailed map of your current location unless you specify an address even though with the wireless they should know your exact location. Also annoying is with maps you can't do any sort of check in with foursquare. I would love to see an email protcol where you tell Peek maps where you are, it emails you back a list of places near you, and then lets you respond to checkin to foursquare with one. This is not the case...oh well. With twitter you can't hook it up as a mobile device because it doesn't support "short codes". Now you could integrate with twitter via email, however because of that imap issue, it would be overwhelmingly annoying cluttering up your email. The other peek integrations are simply getting emails of RSS feeds scheduled...that kinda sucks since you are limited by the formatting from lack of html email support.

I could really go on and on and on about all the things it could do, but then again, it doesn't really promise to do any of these things anyway. It's hard to see a device with so much potential fall just short enough to get me to return it. Don't get me wrong, I love the peek, but I simply wish it did just a little more because it's so close to doing just that.
